Vicke Lindstrand vase

This glass vase was designed by Vicke Lindstrand and produced by Kosta Glasbruk in Sweden during the 1960s. Signed “Kosta 41615 Lindstrand” on the underside, the signature indicates both the model number and Lindstrand’s authorship, making this piece a distinctive example of his work. The vase embodies the organic, fluid aesthetic of Scandinavian mid-century glass art, merging technical precision with expressive form.

The vase is crafted from clear glass with a smooth, high-polish surface and features a slightly asymmetrical form. Its overall shape is rounded and tapering with a softly slanted lip, evoking the appearance of a natural, water-worn stone or seed pod. A teardrop-shaped air bubble is suspended inside the body of the vase, framed by a sweeping internal contour that mirrors the outer profile. This internal motif is created using the graal or submerged air technique, a method where controlled bubbles or inclusions are formed within the glass during the blowing process. This technique, frequently employed by Lindstrand, adds both a decorative and optical effect to the piece.

Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was a prominent Swedish glass designer, known for his innovative contributions first at Orrefors and later at Kosta, where he served as artistic director. His work is characterized by elegant modernism, strong silhouettes, and a creative use of air inclusions and engraving. Lindstrand was also a painter and ceramicist, which influenced the lyrical and pictorial qualities of his glasswork, enhancing the visual appeal of his designs.

Kosta Glasbruk, founded in 1742, is one of Sweden’s oldest glass manufacturers. Under Lindstrand’s leadership in the mid-20th century, the company became known for producing some of the era’s most refined and technically accomplished studio glass, often in limited editions or unique pieces signed by the artist.

The vase is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or clouding. The clarity of the glass and the execution of the internal form are sharp and intact, with only minor surface wear to the base as expected for a piece of this age.

The dimensions of the vase are 10 cm in width, 5 cm in depth, and 12 cm in height (approximately 3.9 inches wide, 2 inches deep, and 4.7 inches high). This piece stands as a fine example of Lindstrand’s mastery in glass design and is a collectible work that highlights the technical and artistic achievements of Swedish glassmaking in the mid-20th century.
