Information

This is a thick-walled glass vase designed by Vicke Lindstrand and produced by Kosta Glasbruk in Sweden during the 1960s. The vase is signed on the base with “Kosta 46694 Lindstrand” indicating both its model number and the designer’s authorship. It is executed in clear glass encasing vivid teal blue internal sculptural elements, employing the Ariel technique to achieve layered depth and optical effects.

The form is a rectangular capsule with rounded vertical sides and a flat base, with a hollow cylindrical core. The most visually striking feature of the piece is the internal decoration: a vibrant, organic inner form in turquoise-blue glass, with oval lens-like cut-ins that reveal interior voids, producing refractions and distortions of light and shadow. This inner mass is entirely encased within the outer clear crystal body, emphasizing a sense of containment and dimensionality.

The vase measures 13.5 cm in width, 8 cm in depth, and 16.5 cm in height (5.31 x 3.15 x 6.50 inches). The condition is good vintage with minor surface signs of wear such as small scratches visible on the base and contact areas, consistent with careful age and use.

Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was one of Sweden’s most influential glass designers, known for his pioneering work at both Orrefors and later Kosta. At Kosta, Lindstrand expanded the boundaries of glass art through experimental techniques including Ariel, Graal, and thick overlay processes. His works from the 1950s and 60s often explored bold color contrasts, fluid internal structures, and optical illusions, making use of Sweden’s advanced glassblowing capabilities.

Kosta Glasbruk, founded in 1742, is among Sweden’s oldest and most prestigious glassworks. Under Lindstrand’s artistic direction in the mid-20th century, Kosta produced some of its most iconic and technically ambitious pieces. This vase exemplifies the studio’s high craftsmanship, merging artistic expression with precision glass engineering in the tradition of Scandinavian modernism.
