Vicke Lindstrand vase
This is a sculptural art glass vase designed by Vicke Lindstrand and produced by Kosta Glasbruk in Sweden during the 1960s. The underside of the vase bears an engraved signature reading “Kosta 46451 Lindstrand” denoting its authenticity and origin within Lindstrand’s design oeuvre for the glassworks.
The vase exhibits a thick-walled, ovoid form that narrows slightly at the opening, emphasizing the heavy, clear casing technique that encapsulates the inner layers of colored glass. The coloration features a striking blend of green, amber, and deep blue, which seamlessly transition and overlap in a fluid, organic manner. The use of sommerso technique, where colored layers are submerged within clear glass, creates a sense of depth and dimensionality, particularly when light refracts through the polished, smooth surface.
Condition is good vintage, with minor signs of handling and surface wear primarily at the base, consistent with age and careful use. The clarity and brightness of the glass remain intact, and the form is undistorted, maintaining its original sculptural presence.
Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was a pivotal figure in 20th-century Swedish glass design, known for his innovative contributions to both Orrefors and later Kosta Glasbruk, where he served as artistic director from 1950 to 1973. At Kosta, Lindstrand developed a signature style that merged modernist abstraction with refined glassmaking techniques, such as graal, ariel, and sommerso. His work often explored transparency, internal layering, and vibrant coloration, earning him international acclaim as a master of mid-century Scandinavian glass.
Its dimensions are 11.5 cm in width, 7 cm in depth, and 22 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 4.5 inches wide, 2.8 inches deep, and 8.7 inches high.
