Vilhelm Lauritzen ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp, model Christiansborg, was designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1950s. It represents a refined example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting, combining functional principles with high-quality materials and craftsmanship. The lamp features a circular brass frame supporting five evenly spaced opal glass shades. Each shade has a rounded, slightly tapered form designed to diffuse light softly while reducing glare. The shades are held by gracefully curved brass supports that integrate smoothly with the main frame.
Suspended by three slender steel cables alongside an electrical cord encased in leather, the lamp is anchored to a brass ceiling mount with a flared profile. The use of patinated brass contrasts warmly with the smooth, milky translucency of the opal glass, creating a balanced and elegant composition.
Vilhelm Lauritzen, a key figure in Danish architecture and design, was known for his functionalist approach and sensitivity to natural lighting. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen helped define Danish lighting aesthetics, emphasizing quality materials, expert craftsmanship, and thoughtful light diffusion. The Christiansborg model exemplifies Lauritzen’s attention to proportion and harmony, marking it as a distinguished piece in Scandinavian lighting history.
