Vilhelm Lauritzen ceiling lamp
Rare ceiling lamp designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1940s. The fixture represents an early example of Lauritzen’s architectural lighting philosophy, where function, material quality, and glare-free illumination are integrated into a cohesive modernist form.
The lamp is constructed in solid brass with three symmetrically arranged arms extending from a central vertical stem. The brass has developed a deep, warm brown patina with visible tonal variation and surface oxidation consistent with age. The stem rises into a flared ceiling canopy, also in brass, which forms a continuous and visually balanced transition between ceiling and fixture. A circular brass collar detail gathers the three arms at the central junction, emphasizing the structural clarity of the design.
Each arm supports a mouth-blown opaline glass shade with a rounded, organic silhouette. The shades are softly bulbous, tapering slightly toward the top and widening toward the lower opening. The opaline glass is matte white when unlit and emits a warm, diffuse glow when illuminated, providing even light distribution while minimizing glare. The relationship between the curved brass arms and the rounded glass volumes creates a harmonious interplay between metal and glass, characteristic of Danish lighting from the period.
Vilhelm Lauritzen was one of Denmark’s most significant architects and designers of the 20th century. His work in lighting was closely connected to his architectural projects, where fixtures were conceived as integral elements of the spatial experience rather than decorative additions. Lauritzen’s collaboration with Louis Poulsen resulted in a number of technically refined and enduring lighting designs that exemplify Scandinavian functionalism.
Louis Poulsen, established in the late 19th century, became a leading Danish lighting manufacturer through its focus on scientific light distribution and collaborations with architects and designers. During the 1940s, the company produced several models in brass and opaline glass that combined craftsmanship with emerging modernist principles, emphasizing controlled illumination and material authenticity.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with visible signs of usage and natural patina on the brass surfaces. Minor surface marks and oxidation are present, consistent with age. The opaline glass shades remain intact and well preserved, without significant damage.
