Vilhelm Lauritzen ceiling lamp
This very rare first edition Ringkrone chandelier was designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1940s. Executed in brass and opaline glass, the lamp represents an early and significant example of Lauritzen’s approach to architectural lighting, where clarity of structure, balanced proportions, and soft, evenly distributed light were central design principles.
The chandelier is constructed around a circular brass ring, from which multiple light points are evenly distributed along the perimeter. Each arm supports a hand-blown opaline glass shade with a rounded, softly bulbous form that transitions into a short cylindrical neck. The opaline glass is milky white with a subtle translucency, producing a warm and diffuse light when illuminated. The brass structure has a golden tone with a lightly brushed surface, showing natural aging and a gentle patina that enhances the material depth without obscuring the original finish.
The suspension system consists of slender wires gathered at a central brass ceiling canopy, creating a visually light yet structurally stable construction. The open ring form gives the chandelier an architectural presence while maintaining transparency, allowing it to occupy space without appearing visually heavy. The arrangement of the shades ensures an even distribution of light both downward and outward, making the Ringkrone suitable for larger rooms where both ambient and functional illumination are required.
Vilhelm Lauritzen was one of Denmark’s most important modernist architects and designers, closely associated with the development of Danish functionalism. His work often emphasized the relationship between light, space, and human experience, and his lighting designs were typically conceived as integral architectural elements rather than decorative objects. The Ringkrone series reflects this philosophy, combining rational geometry with carefully considered light quality.
Louis Poulsen was responsible for producing many of Lauritzen’s lighting designs and played a key role in defining Danish modern lighting during the mid-20th century. Early editions of the Ringkrone are particularly rare and are distinguished by their material quality, construction details, and proportions, which differ subtly from later production versions.
The chandelier is in good vintage condition with small signs of use consistent with age. The brass shows minor surface wear and a natural patina, while the opaline glass shades are well preserved with no apparent damage, maintaining their even surface and soft light diffusion.
Dimensions: diameter 90 cm (35.43 in). Overall height approximately 190 cm (74.80 in), adjustable via the suspension system.
