Vilhelm Lauritzen & Frits Schlegel floor lamp
A very rare height-adjustable floor lamp designed in 1928 by Vilhelm Lauritzen and Frits Schlegel, produced by Fritzsches Glashandel in Denmark. The design exemplifies early Danish functionalism, where architectural clarity and material honesty are combined in a refined and highly purposeful form.
The lamp is executed in brass with a beautifully developed, warm patina across all surfaces. The cylindrical base and stem provide a solid and understated foundation, from which a slender, gently curved arm extends. This elegant curvature gives the piece a light, almost architectural silhouette, balancing the weight of the base with a graceful upper section.
The shade is formed in opaline glass, tapering slightly to create a soft conical profile. It diffuses the light evenly, producing a warm and atmospheric glow while maintaining functional downward illumination. The brass gallery and fittings provide a subtle contrast to the matte translucency of the glass. The shade is likely a later replacement, yet remains highly sympathetic to the original design language.
The lamp is height adjustable, ranging from approximately 124 cm to 144 cm (48.8–56.7 inches). The base diameter measures about 17.5 cm, and the depth is approximately 34 cm (6.9 x 13.4 inches). It remains in good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use, including surface wear and patination to the brass, consistent with its period and contributing to its character.
