Wilhelm Kåge vase

This Surrea ceramic vase, designed by Wilhelm Kåge and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden, is a compelling example of modernist experimentation in mid-20th-century Scandinavian ceramics. As part of the Surrea series—named to evoke Surrealism—this vase captures both sculptural expression and refined craftsmanship, aligning Kåge’s design sensibility with the artistic currents of the era.

The vase is constructed in a clean white matte ceramic, lending it an austere yet elegant presence. The surface is velvety to the eye and touch, emphasizing the sculptural integrity of the form rather than decorative embellishment. The design features a dramatic, organic silhouette: two gently tapering spouts rise in unison from a shared body, bisected vertically by a central seam that creates perfect bilateral symmetry. This dual-spout configuration generates a dynamic tension between balance and motion, function and abstraction—hallmarks of Kåge’s more experimental work in the 1930s to 1950s.

The sculptural nature of the piece, coupled with its surrealist undertone, sets it apart from more conventional vessel forms. Though functional in its essence, the vase reads foremost as an object of art, bridging the line between design and sculpture.

Measuring 17 cm in width, 15 cm in depth, and 33 cm in height (6.7 x 5.9 x 13 inches), the vase has an elongated vertical profile, making it particularly well-suited as a standalone centerpiece or in dialogue with other modernist decorative objects. The condition is excellent. The ceramic surface is intact and free from chips, cracks, or restoration. The matte glaze remains clean and uniform, preserving the subtle play of light and shadow across the form’s curves and planes.

Wilhelm Kåge (1889–1960), artistic director at Gustavsberg from 1917 to 1949, was a visionary in both functional ware and artistic ceramics. While his production lines such as Argenta and Farsta gained international recognition, his Surrea series remains among his most avant-garde, reflecting an interest in sculptural innovation and abstract form. This vase represents a rare and significant contribution to 20th-century ceramic design—imbued with both intellectual and aesthetic depth.
