Information

Very rare and exceptionally tall ceramic vase designed by Wilhelm Kåge and produced by Gustavsberg, Sweden, in 1959. Executed in stoneware, the vase displays Kåge’s refined balance between architectural form, rhythmic surface treatment and nuanced glazing, representing the mature period of his work for Gustavsberg during the post-war era.

The cylindrical form is accentuated by a repeating system of raised horizontal bands encircling the body, creating a strong structural rhythm and emphasizing the vase’s unusually elongated proportions. Between the bands, the surface is articulated with subtle vertical incisions and darker linear accents, producing a restrained geometric pattern that enhances the vessel’s architectural presence. The carefully proportioned repetition gives the piece a distinctly modernist expression while maintaining the tactile qualities associated with Scandinavian studio ceramics of the period.

The glaze composition is particularly rich, combining deep brown and tenmoku-like tones with lighter caramel and beige highlights along the raised ridges. Areas of darker blue-black detailing appear throughout the surface, creating variation and depth within the otherwise earthy palette. The glaze breaks naturally over the relief decoration, emphasizing the texture and craftsmanship of the piece. The interior retains a darker glaze treatment, contrasting elegantly with the exterior’s warm tonal transitions.

Raised on small integrated feet, the vase achieves a subtle sense of elevation despite its substantial height. Its scale and verticality make it highly sculptural, equally suitable as a standalone decorative object or for larger floral arrangements. Examples of this size and proportion are seldom encountered, making the piece particularly rare within Wilhelm Kåge’s production for Gustavsberg.

Marked to the underside with Gustavsberg studio marks, “Farsta”, and signed by Wilhelm Kåge. Dated 1959.

The vase remains in excellent condition.
