Wilhelm Kåge vase
This rare ceramic vase, model Farsta, was designed by Wilhelm Kåge and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden. It is part of the renowned Farsta series, a body of work named after the location of the Gustavsberg studio where Kåge executed some of his most experimental and expressive ceramic designs during the mid-20th century. These pieces are recognized for their strong architectural forms, textured surfaces, and complex glaze treatments.
The vase is distinguished by its hexagonal body with subtly rounded vertical edges, producing a geometric yet softened silhouette. This structured form is further elevated by a series of small, integrated sculptural feet at the base, lifting the vase slightly and reinforcing its object-like presence. The combination of verticality and grounded mass gives the piece a commanding but balanced character.
The surface glaze is richly layered, consisting of earthy olive green as the base tone, with areas of burnt sienna and deep blue accents. The central panels on each side of the vase are decorated with a textured diamond pattern that introduces rhythmic variation and tactile depth. These panels are framed by flowing vertical streaks of glaze that have been applied in a gestural, almost painterly manner, resulting in a dynamic surface where color and texture interact fluidly. The glaze technique exemplifies the studio character of the Farsta line, where each piece displays unique variations in finish.
Condition is excellent, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The glaze is well preserved, retaining its luster and visual complexity, and the form shows no signs of structural wear or restoration. The high level of craftsmanship in both the shaping and glazing processes is evident throughout, affirming the vase’s status as both an artistic and collectible ceramic work.
Wilhelm Kåge (1889–1960), a seminal figure in 20th-century Swedish design, served as artistic director at Gustavsberg from 1917 until the late 1940s. While he is widely known for his functionalist tableware, his studio ceramics, particularly the Farsta series, reflect a different aspect of his creative output—one rooted in sculptural form, experimental surface treatment, and a deep engagement with modernist ideals.
The vase measures 14 cm in diameter (5.5 inches) and 20 cm in height (7.9 inches), making it a compact yet visually impactful object suitable for display in curated interior settings or collections focused on Scandinavian ceramic art.
