Yngvar Sandström table
The side table model “Nikko” was designed by Yngvar Sandström and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden during the 1960s. This piece features a combination of solid and veneered teak paired with a contrasting lacquered wood frame. The tabletop and side panels showcase a warm teak tone with straight, even grain, while the surrounding structural elements are finished in a matte blue-grey lacquer, creating a visually striking color-blocked effect. The design is geometric and minimal, with a rectangular top framed on three sides, angular sides, and a lower support bar that aligns with the tabletop. This form allows the table to be used in multiple orientations, either as a traditional side table or cantilevered over seating, enhancing its functional versatility.
Yngvar Sandström (1928–2023) was a Swedish designer and interior architect noted for his work in furniture and industrial design, often collaborating with leading Scandinavian manufacturers. His designs frequently incorporate bold contrasts and functional modularity, blending refined craftsmanship with graphic simplicity. Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden’s premier luxury department store and furniture producer, was known for upholding high standards of artisanal quality and produced many enduring examples of Scandinavian modernism during this period.
The Nikko table exemplifies mid-century design principles through its clean lines, dual-function usability, and interplay of color and material. The table is in very good original condition, showing minor surface wear on the lacquered sections and faint marks on the teak, consistent with age and use. Its dimensions are 65 centimeters wide, 40 centimeters deep, and 30 centimeters high (approximately 25.6 by 15.7 by 11.8 inches).
