Yngvar Sandström

Yngvar Sandström (1931–2009) was a Swedish designer active during the mid-20th century, working within the context of Scandinavian modernism. Sandström is primarily associated with seating furniture produced in Sweden during the postwar period, but he also contributed to lighting design through collaborations with Swedish manufacturers.

Biography

Sandström was trained in Sweden and became active as a designer during the 1940s and 1950s, a period marked by the expansion of modern furniture and lighting production in Scandinavia. His work reflects the broader ideals of Swedish modernism, where practicality, durability, and craftsmanship were central design principles.

During his career, Sandström collaborated with several Swedish manufacturers. He is most closely associated with seating furniture produced by Seffle Möbelfabrik, where a number of his chairs and lounge models were manufactured. These designs often feature clear structural logic, balanced proportions, and materials selected for durability and everyday use.

Sandström is also documented as having collaborated with the lighting manufacturer Bergboms in Gislaved, in some cases together with designer Alf Svensson. Their work for Bergboms during the 1950s and 1960s forms part of the broader development of Swedish mid-century lighting, where modern materials and industrial production methods were combined with functional design.
