Yngve Ekström mirror
This is a rare rectangular wall mirror known as the “Konkret” model, produced in Sweden during the 1950s by Eden Spegel, Gustafs. The mirror is constructed from beech wood and mirrored glass and is attributed to Swedish designer Yngve Ekström, a prominent figure in Scandinavian modernism known for his refined, nature-inspired forms and precise woodworking.
The frame is crafted in solid beech, finished in a warm honey tone that emphasizes the grain and natural material qualities. It features a striking openwork geometric pattern, with irregular, organic cut-outs that resemble abstracted tree branches or crystalline formations. These voids introduce a strong sculptural dimension to the piece, allowing the wall surface behind to interact visually with the frame. The mirror insert is plain float glass with a simple brass fillet border, reinforcing the minimalist aesthetic.
Yngve Ekström, who is best known for his iconic Lamino chair, frequently worked in wood and emphasized harmony between modern function and organic expression. This piece, while less documented than his furniture works, aligns with his stylistic approach and the broader ethos of Scandinavian mid-century design—highlighting material honesty, structural clarity, and graphic rhythm.
Eden Spegel, located in Sweden, was active in the mid-20th century and produced high-quality mirrors with both functional and decorative applications. Model 135 is especially rare, and this version, with its abstract framework and generous scale, stands out as a sculptural wall object as much as a reflective surface.
The mirror is in very good vintage condition, with minor age-related wear consistent with use. The glass is clear, and the wooden frame retains its finish and structural integrity.
The dimensions are 56 cm wide by 83 cm high by 2 cm deep, which corresponds to approximately 22 inches by 32.7 inches by 0.8 inches.
