Yngve Ekström mirror
This very rare mirror is attributed to Yngve Ekström and was produced by Eden Spegel in Sweden, during the 1950s. The mirror exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and sculptural sensibility characteristic of Swedish mid-century design, combining functional clarity with a distinct architectural rhythm.
The frame is crafted in solid mahogany with a rich, warm tone and visible natural grain. The structure features a geometric openwork composition of intersecting angular elements, creating a visual play of light and shadow across its surface. This design approach reflects Ekström’s understanding of proportion and spatial balance, giving the mirror both structural lightness and visual depth. The mirrored glass is bordered by a narrow wooden edge that accentuates the sculptural quality of the frame.
The piece is in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of wear consistent with age. The wood retains its original finish and a soft patina that highlights its depth and tone. The mirror glass remains clear and in very good condition with no notable scratches or clouding.
Eden Spegel, based in Sweden, was a noted manufacturer of mirrors and decorative glass in the mid-twentieth century, collaborating with leading Swedish designers and furniture producers. Yngve Ekström (1913–1988), best known as the co-founder of Swedese, was one of the central figures in Scandinavian modernism. His work often combined structural efficiency with organic forms, expressed through honest material use and refined detailing.
This mirror represents the Scandinavian modern ethos of combining craftsmanship, functionality, and natural materials in a unified form. It stands as both a practical object and a sculptural statement suitable for architectural interiors of the period.
