Information

This rare folding screen, or room divider, is a distinctive piece that blends historical reference with mid-century craftsmanship. The screen comprises four individual rectangular panels, each constructed with a fabric surface stretched over a solid frame and detailed with brass rivets. The front of the screen presents a richly illustrated historical map of Madrid, likely from the mid-17th century, rendered in an elaborate cartographic style typical of early modern European mapmaking. The city layout is detailed with streets, buildings, waterways, and inscriptions, framed by ornamental motifs that underscore the decorative and archival nature of the print.

The fabric used as the primary surface material is a muted ochre or light brown tone, which serves as a neutral yet warm background that enhances the visual impact of the map while contributing to the screen’s aged, antique character. The reverse side of the panels is undecorated, covered uniformly in the same fabric, offering a simpler and more subdued aesthetic when the screen is viewed from behind. This duality—ornate on one side and restrained on the other—offers versatility in interior use, allowing the screen to function as both a visual centerpiece and a discrete partition.

The edges of each panel are defined by neat rows of brass nail heads, which not only serve a decorative role but also act as reinforcement, securing the fabric to the frame. These rivets introduce a subtle metallic detail that complements the warm fabric tones while emphasizing the piece’s artisanal construction.

In terms of condition, the screen is generally well preserved, though there are visible signs of age-related wear, particularly near the lower portions of the panels where the fabric exhibits some staining and surface discoloration. These marks are consistent with the piece’s age and usage and contribute to its authenticity as a vintage object.

Each panel measures 58 cm in width, 3.5 cm in depth, and 181.5 cm in height. In inches, this equates approximately to 22.8 inches wide, 1.4 inches deep, and 71.5 inches high per panel. When fully extended, the total span of the screen would be around 232 cm (or 91.3 inches) in width.
