Information

This freestanding book shelf, sometimes referred to as a book crib, was designed by Bruno Mathsson and produced by Firma Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden. The example was manufactured in 1968 and is constructed in solid ash with a warm, light-toned finish that emphasizes the natural grain structure of the wood.

The design consists of a trapezoidal open container divided into three vertical compartments by gently angled internal partitions. The sides taper subtly toward the base, giving the piece a light, architectural profile. It stands on four slender, curved legs that lift the body from the floor and contribute to the characteristic visual lightness associated with Mathsson’s work. The proportions are compact and balanced, allowing the piece to function as a bookshelf, magazine holder, or general storage unit in both domestic and professional interiors.

Bruno Mathsson was a central figure in Swedish modernism, known for his rigorous exploration of ergonomics, material honesty, and industrially informed craftsmanship. His furniture designs often combine functional clarity with refined construction, and this piece reflects those principles through its clear geometry, efficient use of material, and carefully executed joinery. Firma Karl Mathsson, founded by his father, played a key role in realizing Bruno Mathsson’s designs and maintaining high production standards in solid wood furniture.

The ash surfaces show a consistent grain pattern with a smooth finish. The piece is in excellent vintage condition, with only minimal signs of age and use. No structural issues are present, and the legs and internal dividers remain firm and well aligned.

Dimensions are approximately 50 cm in width, 26 cm in depth, and 26 cm in height, corresponding to about 19.7 x 10.2 x 10.2 inches.
