Ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, produced by Arnold Wiig’s Fabrikker (AWF) in Norway, exemplifies the sophisticated elegance of mid-20th-century Scandinavian lighting. Although the designer is unknown, the lamp reflects a refined synthesis of materials and form characteristic of Norwegian decorative arts during the period. Constructed from brass and white opaline glass, the chandelier presents a harmonious balance of warm metallic and softly diffused surfaces.
The design is symmetrical and radiating, featuring a central vertical brass rod from which a series of gracefully curved brass arms extend outward. Each arm supports a single teardrop-shaped glass shade, made from opaline glass. These shades are gently tapered at the top and flare subtly at the base, providing a smooth transition between the slender brass mounts and the light-emitting ends. When illuminated, the glass diffuses the light evenly, creating a soft, ambient glow while also emphasizing the sculptural quality of the fixture.
The brass has developed a warm patina that contributes to the lamp’s vintage authenticity. Surface wear is minimal and consistent with age, visible primarily on the arms and central rod. The shades are well-preserved and structurally intact, with no chips, cracks, or visible repairs, maintaining their original milky white coloration and matte finish.
Arnold Wiig’s Fabrikker, active in the mid-20th century, was known for producing high-quality lighting and decorative objects, often in brass and glass. While many of its designs were unsigned or produced by in-house designers, the firm maintained a standard of craftsmanship that aligned with the broader Scandinavian design ethos: clarity of form, thoughtful material use, and quiet elegance.
This ceiling lamp is particularly notable for its generous proportions and balanced geometry, which allow it to function as both a light source and a sculptural centerpiece in a room.
