Hans Bergström ceiling lamp

This very rare six-light ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced during the 1950s by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. The fixture consists of three intersecting teak arms suspended beneath a brass ceiling canopy. Each arm carries two light sources, creating a broad, star-like composition with six shades arranged around the central crossing point.

The construction combines reddish-brown teak with golden brass collars, suspension hardware and ceiling fittings. Six rounded, slightly ovoid shades are covered in ivory-white fabric stretched over spiral ribs. The translucent fabric softens the light and reveals the ribbed construction when illuminated, producing a warm, evenly diffused glow. Fine suspension cords connect the horizontal structure to the canopy and visually reduce the weight of the large fixture.

The design is characteristic of Swedish Modern lighting from the 1950s. Its geometry is clearly articulated without appearing rigid: the intersecting wooden arms establish an architectural framework, while the rounded textile shades introduce an organic rhythm. The combination of wood, metal and fabric reflects the Scandinavian emphasis on visible construction, natural materials and controlled atmospheric illumination.

Hans Bergström was a Swedish lighting designer and the founder of Ateljé Lyktan. His work frequently combined practical lighting requirements with sculptural compositions and carefully considered material contrasts. In this example, the six individually positioned shades distribute light across a wide area, while their varied orientations give the lamp a different profile when viewed from each side.

Ateljé Lyktan was established by Bergström in Åhus in 1934 and became an important Swedish producer of architectural and domestic lighting. Its historical production is closely associated with Bergström’s interest in functional light distribution, precise metalwork and experimental shade construction. This lamp belongs to the company’s mid-century period, when modernist engineering was combined with warmer decorative materials and forms.

The lamp measures 105 cm in diameter and 80 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 41.3 inches in diameter and 31.5 inches in height. It is in good vintage condition with small signs of use consistent with its age, including minor surface wear and natural patination to the materials.
