Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chairs

This very rare pair of easy chairs, model U56—widely known as the Elizabeth Chair—was designed in 1956 by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by the esteemed Danish cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen. As one of the most celebrated designs of Kofod-Larsen’s career, the U56 exemplifies the core values of Danish mid-century modernism: sculptural form, superior craftsmanship, and an uncompromising dedication to material quality.

Each chair features a finely constructed frame made of solid wengé wood, a dense and richly grained tropical hardwood that was rarely used in Danish furniture production due to its rarity and complexity to work with. The wood exhibits deep brown to almost black tones with subtle figuring and a tactile, oiled finish that enhances the organic elegance of the form. The joints are seamless, and the frame’s silhouette is defined by soft curves and angular transitions, most notably in the armrests, which flare outward with a sculptural lightness that belies the strength of the structure.

The seat and backrest are upholstered in the original black leather, which has developed a supple patina with time. The leather surfaces show subtle creases and tonal variation, signs of authentic aging that enrich the chairs’ character without compromising their integrity. The upholstery remains structurally sound and comfortable, supported by a spring foundation and generous padding. The low, reclining posture and wide proportions of the chair reflect Kofod-Larsen’s ergonomic sensibility and his commitment to blending comfort with a refined aesthetic.

The chairs’ nickname—Elizabeth Chairs—derives from a reputed purchase made by Queen Elizabeth II during a state visit to Copenhagen in the 1950s. This royal connection not only bestowed prestige on the model but also contributed to its international recognition, marking a pivotal moment in the global appreciation of Danish design.

Christensen & Larsen, known for its collaborations with leading Danish designers, executed these chairs to the highest standard of cabinetmaking. The quality of their construction is evident in the precisely joined frame, the hand-finished surfaces, and the attention to balance and proportion.

Condition is excellent vintage. The wengé frames are solid and display a deep, consistent patina. The leather is original, well-preserved, and aged gracefully with expected signs of use, adding depth and authenticity to these historically significant pieces.
