Poul Henningsen table lamp
This very rare table lamp, model PH 2/2, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark in 1931. It features a browned brass frame with a gracefully curved arm supporting Henningsen’s signature multi-shade system, engineered to provide glare-free and evenly diffused light. The shades are crafted from amber-colored glass, complemented by a frosted glass bottom bowl that softens and warms the light output.
Poul Henningsen was a pioneering Danish architect and lighting designer whose PH series revolutionized illumination design by applying scientific principles to control light distribution. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen yielded some of the most iconic and enduring pieces of 20th-century lighting design, combining functionality with elegant form.
Constructed from high-quality materials, the lamp exhibits a natural patina on its brass components consistent with its vintage status, adding to its character. The PH 2/2 lamp belongs to the larger PH system, where the numbers indicate the diameter of the top shade and proportional sizing of the lower shades, with this model’s top shade measuring about 20 cm.
The lamp exemplifies Scandinavian modernism with its emphasis on craftsmanship, natural materials, and functional design. It remains in very good vintage condition, showing age-appropriate wear that enhances its historical significance.
