Information

This PH-3/2 table lamp is an early example of Poul Henningsen’s pioneering work with glare-free lighting, designed and produced in Denmark by Louis Poulsen during the 1940s. The lamp belongs to the celebrated PH system, developed to control light through a carefully calculated arrangement of shades, creating an even, comfortable illumination while keeping the light source discreetly concealed.

The lamp features the classic three-shade construction, with a broad upper metal shade in a warm yellow tone, a secondary inner metal shade, and a lower opaline glass shade that softly diffuses the light. The underside of the top shade shows the characteristic white reflective surface with visible age-related wear, contributing to the lamp’s authentic period character. The stem and base are executed in darkened metal, providing a restrained and functional counterpoint to the lighter shades, while the overall proportions give the lamp a balanced and architectural presence.

When lit, the PH-3/2 produces a warm, atmospheric glow, directing light primarily downward while gently illuminating the surrounding space. This makes it particularly well suited for use on a desk, sideboard, or bedside table, where both functional light and visual calm are desired. The design reflects Henningsen’s belief that good lighting should serve human comfort first, an approach that remains timeless and relevant.

The lamp measures approximately 30 cm in diameter and 44 cm in height, corresponding to about 11.8 inches in diameter and 17.3 inches in height. It is in ok vintage condition, with visible signs of use consistent with age. The middle glass shade has a crack, which is clearly reflected in the price and should be considered part of the lamp’s historical integrity rather than a later flaw. Overall, this is a genuine and evocative example of early Danish modern lighting design, carrying both functional value and strong historical presence.
