Poul Henningsen table lamp
This rare and early table lamp, model PH-3/2, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark. Dating to approximately 1927 and marked with “PAT. APPL.”, the lamp is a significant historical artifact from the formative years of modern Scandinavian lighting design. Its early production status places it among the first iterations of Henningsen’s revolutionary three-shade system, which sought to achieve harmonious and glare-free illumination.
The lamp is composed of a solid brass base and stem, both of which exhibit a pronounced patina. This surface oxidation and tonal variation underscore its age and contribute to the overall authenticity of the piece. The finish is unpolished, allowing the natural development of the brass to remain visible, consistent with preservation standards for early 20th-century design.
The defining element of the lamp is its three-shade diffuser, made from yellowed opal glass. The glass is tiered concentrically in a 3/2 configuration—one large top shade supported by two smaller lower shades. This optical system was developed by Henningsen to provide both downward-directed and ambient light while eliminating direct glare. The coloration of the glass has shifted subtly with time, acquiring a warm, aged tone that complements the brass base.
The overall condition is good vintage, with age-appropriate wear. The brass shows minor surface markings and patination, while the glass shades are intact with only minimal irregularities consistent with age and early glass fabrication techniques.
Poul Henningsen, a Danish architect, writer, and lighting theorist, devoted much of his career to improving the quality of artificial light. The PH-3/2 lamp represents a key moment in his design trajectory and reflects his scientific approach to lighting and his belief in design as a means to improve everyday life. Louis Poulsen, the Danish lighting manufacturer, was a long-term partner in producing Henningsen’s designs and remains closely associated with his legacy.
The “PAT. APPL.” marking is indicative of a pre-patent production piece, increasing the rarity and historical value of the lamp. Such markings are characteristic of prototypes or very early production runs before patent registration was finalized.
