Poul Henningsen table lamp
Very rare table lamp model “Natbordslampen” designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1930s. The lamp is an early example of Henningsen’s lifelong exploration of glare-free illumination and layered shade construction, developed through mathematical light studies and a functionalist understanding of domestic lighting environments.
The lamp is executed in brass, lacquered metal, and glass, combining industrial materials with refined proportions characteristic of early Danish modernism. The construction is centered around Poul Henningsen’s signature multi-shade system, designed to diffuse and direct light in controlled layers while minimizing direct glare. The shades are rendered in soft cream and warm yellow tones, producing a distinctly atmospheric amber-colored illumination when lit. The layered geometry creates a gradual transition between reflected and filtered light, emphasizing both functional efficiency and sculptural presence.
The curved brass arm gives the composition an elegant suspended appearance, visually balancing the lamp head above the circular weighted base. The brass surfaces have developed a natural patina with age, contrasting with the cooler matte metal components at the base and upper shade mount. The lamp retains a strong Art Deco influence through its streamlined curves and symmetrical balance, while simultaneously anticipating the principles of Scandinavian functionalism that Poul Henningsen helped define internationally.
Poul Henningsen is regarded as one of the most influential lighting designers of the twentieth century. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in the 1920s and resulted in some of the most technically innovative lighting systems of the modern era. Henningsen’s work focused on human-centered illumination, where light quality, reflection, and visual comfort were prioritized over decorative excess. Louis Poulsen became the principal producer of his designs and remains one of Denmark’s most historically important lighting manufacturers.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use consistent with its period. The brass has acquired an even patina and the lacquered shades show wear and surface marks, including areas of paint loss and age-related discoloration. These details contribute to the authenticity and historical character of the piece. The lamp retains its sculptural quality both illuminated and unlit, with the layered shades producing a warm and highly atmospheric light distribution.
