Josef Frank table lamps
This rare pair of table lamps, model 2464, was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. Constructed from brass and white lacquered metal, the lamps retain their original fabric lampshades decorated with a floral motif. The circular brass bases support slender white lacquered metal stems, which rise to meet the shades. Beneath each shade, a decorative brass element with a curved support adds an elegant detail that enhances the overall design.
The lampshades are crafted from fabric printed with soft pastel floral patterns, shaped into an hourglass form that flares gently at both the top and bottom. Structured pleating reinforces the shape, while the fabric softly diffuses light, creating a warm and inviting glow when illuminated.
Josef Frank (1885–1967) was an Austrian-Swedish architect and designer known for integrating humanistic values into modernist design. His work with Svenskt Tenn blended functionalism with decorative and organic elements, producing designs that are both practical and visually engaging. Svenskt Tenn, founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, became a leading Swedish design firm recognized for high-quality furniture and lighting that combined modernist principles with playful patterns and rich materials.
These lamps exemplify mid-century Scandinavian design by balancing simplicity with ornamentation. The combination of brass, lacquered metal, and floral fabric illustrates the successful fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modernist aesthetics.
The lamps are in good vintage condition, showing minor wear on the brass and lacquered surfaces consistent with their age. Each lamp measures 46 cm in diameter and 73 cm in height (18.1 x 28.7 inches), making them elegant and timeless lighting pieces.
