Information

This rare floor candelabra was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. The candelabra is crafted from black lacquered steel and features a hand-wrapped leather grip, embodying Jakobsson’s design language that is deeply rooted in Scandinavian modernism. His work is characterized by clarity of form, structural rhythm, and a meticulous attention to materiality, all of which are evident in this piece.

The candelabra consists of a vertical cylindrical stem anchored in a solid round base. From the upper section, six individual arms extend laterally at varying heights and angles. Each arm supports a cylindrical candleholder with a flared drip tray, contributing to a functional yet sculptural form. The staggered arrangement of the arms creates a rhythmic visual effect, reminiscent of tree branches or organic structures—an aesthetic Jakobsson frequently explored in both his lighting and decorative designs. Below the branching structure, a hand-wrapped band of natural leather encircles the central shaft, offering a tactile contrast to the black lacquered steel and enhancing the piece’s monochromatic finish with a touch of warmth and texture.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was one of Sweden’s most influential designers of the mid-20th century, best known for his innovative lighting designs. While primarily celebrated for his lighting work, Jakobsson also designed a range of decorative objects and furnishings through his company, which he founded in Markaryd in the early 1950s. This floor candelabra is a rare example of his non-electric designs and reflects his signature sculptural sensibility and commitment to craftsmanship.

The underside of the base is stamped with Jakobsson’s full name and the company mark, verifying the authenticity of the piece. The condition of the candelabra is good, with minor wear to the black lacquer surface and slight patination on the leather, consistent with its age and use. There is no structural damage, and the candelabra remains fully stable and functional.

The candelabra measures 35 cm in diameter and 122 cm in height (approximately 13.8 inches in diameter and 48 inches tall). This piece combines architectural clarity with refined craftsmanship, perfectly representing Scandinavian mid-century decorative object design.
