Märta Blomstedt easy chairs

This very rare pair of easy chairs, model Aulanko, was designed by Finnish architect and designer Märta Blomstedt in 1939. The chairs were originally created for the lounge area of the prestigious Hotel Aulanko, a landmark of modern Finnish architecture in Hämeenlinna, Finland. Their design reflects the elegant yet relaxed atmosphere intended for the hotel’s public spaces.

The chairs exhibit a distinctive sculptural form, with generously curved armrests and a softly rounded backrest that provide exceptional comfort. The current upholstery is a newly executed beige bouclé fabric, which enhances the tactile quality of the design while respecting its original character. The fabric’s soft texture complements the organic lines of the chairs, bringing out their subtle volume and inviting silhouette.

The frames are crafted in birch wood, resting on characteristic spherical wooden feet, stained in a rich dark tone. These feet not only elevate the structure visually but also create a playful counterpoint to the otherwise flowing form of the upholstered elements.

This pair remains in good vintage condition, exhibiting minor signs of age and use consistent with careful preservation. The chairs have been professionally restored and reupholstered, ensuring both aesthetic fidelity and functional longevity.

The model Aulanko is considered one of Märta Blomstedt’s rarest and most celebrated furniture designs. As an architect, Blomstedt was known for her holistic modernist approach, where architecture and interior elements were conceived as an integrated whole. These chairs exemplify this vision, combining sculptural elegance with practical comfort—an embodiment of early Scandinavian modernism with an enduring appeal.
