Information

This rare set of six armchairs, model JH-505, commonly known as the Cowhorn Chair, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Denmark. Designed in 1952, the Cowhorn Chair exemplifies Wegner’s mastery in sculptural form and ergonomic sensibility, particularly through its compact yet expressive armrest design.

The frame is constructed from solid teak, chosen for its warm, mid-toned grain and structural durability. The upper section of the chair, including the signature cowhorn-shaped armrests, is crafted in rosewood, distinguished by its darker color and fine texture, adding contrast and definition to the sculptural upper profile. The transition between the woods is subtle and precisely executed, emphasizing the artisanal craftsmanship that characterizes Johannes Hansen’s workshop. The defining feature of this model is the low, outward-curving armrests which inspired the name “Cowhorn.” Unlike traditional armchairs, the short armrests are designed to offer a resting place for the arms without obstructing the ability to slide the chair close to a dining table. The result is a chair that combines the comfort of an armchair with the practical footprint of a side chair. The backrest is gently curved for lumbar support, with carved finger joints adding a visible sign of skilled cabinetmaking. The seat is woven in natural cane in a tight basket weave, consistent with Danish traditions of handwoven seating. The cane is in very good condition, showing minimal wear consistent with careful use and age. The wood has been lightly restored and oiled, preserving its patina while maintaining structural integrity.

Hans J. Wegner, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Scandinavian design, collaborated with cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen on many of his most refined early works. The JH-505 is a product of this collaboration and represents the height of Danish functionalism with its organic form, advanced joinery, and user-centered approach.

The chairs are in very good vintage condition. Some minor wear is visible to the cane and edges of the wood, consistent with careful use and age. Each piece is marked with the original Johannes Hansen maker’s plaque.

Dimensions are 58 cm wide, 45 cm deep, and 74 cm high, with a seat height of 42 cm (22.8 x 17.7 x 29.1 inches, seat height 16.5 inches).
