Berndt Friberg vase
This rare large ceramic vase was designed by Berndt Friberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1966, representing a refined example of Scandinavian modernist pottery. The vase exhibits an elongated, organic form with a gently curving profile that tapers gracefully from a rounded base to a narrow, flared neck, showcasing Friberg’s mastery of proportion and balance.
The surface is finished with Friberg’s signature hare’s fur glaze, renowned for its soft, flowing texture and subtle color transitions. The glaze presents a nuanced gradient of blue-green tones, with a slightly deeper hue pooling around the midsection, enhancing the sculptural quality of the form. Fine striations within the glaze create a velvety appearance, reflecting Friberg’s meticulous craftsmanship.
Berndt Friberg (1899–1981) was one of Sweden’s most celebrated ceramic artists, distinguished for his precision wheel-thrown forms and exceptional glazing techniques. Trained as a turner at Höganäs and later working closely with Wilhelm Kåge at Gustavsberg, his work draws inspiration from classical Asian ceramics, characterized by elegant minimalism and technical perfection.
The vase is in excellent vintage condition, bearing Friberg’s signature and the Gustavsberg studio mark on the underside. It measures 9.5 cm in diameter and 32 cm in height (3.7 by 12.6 inches), exemplifying the highest standards of mid-century Scandinavian ceramic artistry.
