Information

This is a rare and refined pair of easy chairs, model Samsö, designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. The chairs exemplify the Nordic mid-century approach to comfort and aesthetics, where sculptural elegance meets high-quality craftsmanship.

The frames are constructed in richly grained rosewood, exhibiting warm, dark brown hues with streaks of deeper grain patterning. The silhouette is composed of slender, tapering legs and upward sweeping back legs that provide a subtle but confident stance. The armrests are slightly raised and carved with a gentle inward curve, forming a continuous line with the backrest frame. The seat and back cushions are upholstered in original brown-red leather with a warm patina that has developed over time. The leather presents natural creases, variations in tone, and signs of age-related use consistent with careful vintage wear, contributing to the chairs’ tactile authenticity and historic character.

Ib Kofod-Larsen was one of the leading figures of Danish modernism, known for his sensual yet architectural furniture. His designs emphasized organic lines, ergonomics, and noble materials. Kofod-Larsen frequently collaborated with Swedish, Danish, and British manufacturers, and his work remains highly collectible for its understated elegance and finely tuned proportions.

OPE Möbler, a Swedish manufacturer with a reputation for executing finely crafted furniture, was among the notable collaborators with Kofod-Larsen during the mid-century era. The company’s production was defined by meticulous joinery and the use of premium woods, positioning their output within the higher tier of Scandinavian furniture craftsmanship of the time.

These chairs reflect the aesthetics of Scandinavian modernism, blending minimal ornamentation with a tactile material palette and fluid design language. They represent an ideal synthesis of Danish design sensibilities and Swedish craftsmanship, suited to both domestic and curated interiors.
