Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chairs
This is a rare and sculptural pair of easy chairs, model Sälen, designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Ib Kofod-Larsen during the 1950s. These chairs are emblematic of Kofod-Larsen’s distinctive approach to mid-century seating—where form, comfort, and materiality coalesce in an organic yet precise visual language.
The frames are crafted from solid teak and display the hallmark craftsmanship associated with Scandinavian modernism. The design features gently curving armrests that sweep upward in a gesture that is both structural and expressive, culminating in sharply defined ends that resemble organic fins or wings. These sculptural arms are a defining characteristic of the Sälen model and contribute to its visual lightness and elegance.
The seat shell and cushions are upholstered in the original cognac-brown leather, which has developed a rich and even patina over time. The leather exhibits visible signs of use, including surface creases and tonal variation, consistent with the age and natural aging process of high-quality hide. The rear shell, crafted in a molded form, is slightly reclined and cradles the sitter, while the loose seat cushion adds comfort and flexibility. The structure is supported by slightly angled rear legs and a subtle cross-stretcher under the seat, reinforcing both stability and poise.
Ib Kofod-Larsen was one of the key figures of Danish modern design, noted for his collaborations with Swedish, Danish, and American manufacturers throughout the mid-20th century. The Sälen chairs were produced by OPE Möbler (OPE), a Swedish manufacturer known for its high-quality production and partnership with Scandinavian designers during the postwar period. The Sälen model, like many of Kofod-Larsen’s works, achieved popularity in Sweden and the United States, often appealing to collectors for its sensual contours and refined material palette.
These chairs are in good vintage condition. The teak frames display minimal wear, with well-preserved joints and finish. The leather shows surface patination, light abrasions, and some softening, in keeping with their vintage character.
Each chair measures 80 cm wide, 80 cm deep, and 72.5 cm high, with a seat height of 39 cm (equivalent to 31.5 x 31.5 x 28.5 inches, seat height 15.4 inches).
