Flemming Lassen attrib. easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs is attributed to Flemming Lassen and was produced by cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen in Denmark during the 1930s. The chairs feature a softly rounded form with generous proportions, typical of early Danish modernism’s emphasis on comfort and organic shape. The design combines sculptural presence with a sense of enclosure, achieved through the sweeping curvature of the backrest and armrests, which flow seamlessly into one another.
The frames are crafted from dark-stained beech, resting on short cylindrical legs that give the chairs a grounded appearance. They have been newly reupholstered in natural sheepskin, preserving the tactile and inviting quality associated with Lassen’s designs. The dense, warm-toned wool surface is complemented by leather-covered buttons in a subtle contrasting tone, emphasizing the hand-finished detail and craftsmanship. The texture of the sheepskin adds depth and softness, enhancing the chairs’ sense of warmth and intimacy.
Flemming Lassen (1902–1984) was among the pioneers of functionalist design in Denmark and a contemporary of Arne Jacobsen, with whom he shared a commitment to human-centered modernism. Lassen’s furniture designs are characterized by their sculptural forms and deep concern for comfort, reflecting his architectural background and his fascination with organic, almost anthropomorphic shapes. His early lounge chairs, produced by master cabinetmakers such as A.J. Iversen, are now regarded as landmarks of Danish design history.
The pair remains in excellent vintage condition with only minor traces of use to the wooden elements. The upholstery has been renewed according to the original specifications, maintaining both authenticity and function. These pieces exemplify the craftsmanship and design innovation that defined prewar Danish furniture-making.
