Barbro Nilsson carpet
Rare carpet model Snäckorna, designed by Barbro Nilsson and produced by Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB in Sweden. The piece features a sophisticated geometric pattern with stylized shell-like forms, characteristic of Nilsson’s weaving style. The color palette is dominated by deep blues, complemented by dark brown, burgundy, cream, and ochre tones, which create a rhythmic, almost musical pattern across the surface.
The rug is executed in flat weave (rölakan), showcasing MMF’s mastery of traditional Swedish weaving techniques. The borders frame the composition with repeating diamond motifs, while the center features a bold zigzag band and scattered decorative elements, giving the piece both structure and dynamic movement. This model was designed in 1943 and remains one of Nilsson’s celebrated works, exemplifying mid-century Scandinavian textile design with its blend of modernist abstraction and artisanal craftsmanship.
The carpet is in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of wear consistent with age. Dimensions: 273 x 192 cm (107.5 x 75.5 inches).
