Information

This pair of wall-mounted candlesticks is attributed to Austrian designer Carl Auböck and was produced for Illums Bolighus in Denmark during the 1950s. Crafted entirely from solid brass, the design embodies the understated yet sculptural qualities characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian and Viennese modernism.

Each piece is formed from a single length of bent brass tubing, creating a rhythmic, wave-like silhouette with two upward-facing candleholders. The elegant, flowing form reflects Auböck’s interest in combining functional objects with sculptural qualities — a hallmark of his studio’s work, which often blurred the line between utility and art. The warm patina that has developed over decades adds depth and character to the surface, enhancing its tactile appeal while testifying to its age and authenticity.

Carl Auböck was one of the most influential figures of 20th-century Austrian design. Originally trained as a painter at the Bauhaus under Johannes Itten, he later returned to Vienna to join his family’s workshop, transforming it into a renowned studio known for its sophisticated, handcrafted metalwork. Illums Bolighus, one of Scandinavia’s most important design retailers, played a central role in introducing such modern European designs to the Nordic market during the post-war period.

The candlesticks are in excellent vintage condition with small signs of age and use.

Dimensions are 11 cm wide, 10 cm deep, and 15 cm high (4.3 x 3.9 x 5.9 in)
