Carl Auböck bookend
This rare brass bookend, attributed to Carl Auböck and produced by Illums Bolighus in Denmark during the 1950s, is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship. Its sculptural, minimalist silhouette embodies Auböck’s approach to functional objects as both utilitarian tools and pieces of modern art. The form is reduced to its essential geometry — a gently curved vertical plane that transitions smoothly into a horizontal base — creating both visual balance and stability for supporting books. The surface features a warm brass tone with traces of natural patina, enhanced by a blackened interior plane that provides contrast and emphasizes the object’s architectural qualities.
Carl Auböck, one of the most influential Austrian designers of the 20th century, was known for transforming everyday objects into thoughtful, tactile pieces that merged art and functionality. His work often explored the interplay of materials and surfaces, with brass being a signature element. Illums Bolighus, the prestigious Danish retailer, was instrumental in introducing such modernist pieces to the Scandinavian market, promoting design that was both aesthetic and practical.
This bookend remains in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor signs of age and use. Its restrained form and refined craftsmanship make it an elegant example of mid-century decorative design, suitable for both functional and sculptural display.
