Information

This rare ceiling lamp, or flush mount, was designed and produced by Lars Holmström in Arvika, Sweden, during the 1930s. Executed in brass, steel, and frosted glass, the piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and decorative geometry of early Scandinavian Art Deco lighting.

The circular frame, constructed from solid steel with a natural aged surface, encases a frosted glass diffuser adorned with a brass overlay in an intricate, symmetrical scrollwork pattern. The design balances ornamental detail with structural clarity — a hallmark of Holmström’s work — where light softly filters through the frosted glass, casting warm, diffuse illumination while accentuating the brass ornamentation. The lamp is designed for flush ceiling mounting but may also be used as a wall fixture, offering versatility in architectural settings.

Lars Holmström (1881–1959) was a Swedish designer and metal craftsman active in Arvika, known for his iron and brass work that merged artisanal tradition with modern stylistic influences. His studio, Arvika Konsthantverk, was among the most respected Swedish metalwork ateliers of the early 20th century. Holmström’s lighting designs from the 1920s and 1930s are distinguished by their sculptural precision, harmonious proportions, and enduring material quality, bridging the transition from Swedish Grace to early modernism.

This example remains in excellent vintage condition with a fine, even patina across the metal surfaces and minimal wear consistent with age. The frosted glass diffuser is intact and displays a soft matte finish, free from cracks or chips.

Diameter 60 cm (23.6 inches), height 17 cm (6.7 inches).
