Kay Kørbing ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp was designed by Kay Kørbing and produced by the renowned Danish lighting manufacturer Lyfa in 1967. Exemplifying the refined minimalism and functional elegance characteristic of Scandinavian modernism, the lamp is executed in polished brass with a cylindrical form that transitions into a broader shade. A clear glass diffuser beneath the brass structure softens the light and distributes it evenly, creating a warm and inviting illumination. The precisely perforated detailing around the lower edge adds a technical and architectural dimension to the design, while also aiding heat dissipation.
Kay Kørbing was part of the influential wave of Danish lighting designers who, during the mid-20th century, redefined interior illumination by merging sculptural form with strict functionalism. His work reflects the Danish modern ethos—clean lines, thoughtful proportions, and a sensitivity to material and craftsmanship. Kørbing’s designs for Lyfa in particular are celebrated for their restrained yet highly architectural character, often incorporating industrial materials like brass and glass to achieve a timeless aesthetic.
Founded in the early 20th century, Lyfa became one of Denmark’s most important lighting manufacturers and played a pivotal role in shaping the identity of Scandinavian design. Throughout the postwar decades, the company collaborated with some of the era’s most innovative designers, producing pieces that remain highly sought after by collectors today. Their lamps are known for their durability, precision, and understated elegance—qualities that are all present in this piece.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition, with only minor signs of age and use. It is an outstanding representation of late 1960s Danish lighting design, balancing functionality with a striking industrial elegance.
