Kay Kørbing

Kay Kørbing (1915–2004) was a Danish architect and designer associated with modern lighting and furniture design during the mid-20th century. He is particularly known for his work with maritime interiors, where functionality, durability, and clarity of form were essential considerations. Biography

Kay Kørbing trained as an architect in Denmark and became active as a designer during the postwar decades, a period marked by increasing demand for well-designed interiors in both public buildings and passenger ships. He developed furniture and lighting for maritime environments, including seating used aboard vessels such as Sagafjord and Winston Churchill, where robust construction and efficient use of materials were central requirements.

In addition to his work with ship interiors, Kørbing collaborated with manufacturers including Lyfa, producing lighting fixtures characterized by simple geometric forms and careful material selection, often in brass and glass. His designs typically emphasize functionality and long-term usability, reflecting the industrial and architectural context in which they were developed.
