Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model PH-4/4, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1930s. It is constructed from copper-plated brass and frosted glass, featuring Henningsen’s signature multi-shade system designed to provide glare-free and evenly diffused light.
The PH-4/4 incorporates a tiered arrangement of three frosted glass shades, each precisely engineered to reflect and distribute light softly and ambiently. The copper-plated brass fixture has developed a natural patina over time, enhancing its vintage character. The suspension system includes a long brass rod that connects to a flared ceiling cup, preserving the original design’s integrity.
Poul Henningsen was a pioneering Danish designer whose collaboration with Louis Poulsen revolutionized interior lighting. His PH series lamps were created based on scientific principles of light distribution, delivering both functional and atmospheric illumination.
The lamp measures 40 cm in diameter (15.7 inches) and 29 cm in height (11.4 inches) excluding the suspension rod, with a total height of 83 cm (32.7 inches) including the rod. It remains in well-preserved vintage condition, showing minor wear on the metal consistent with its age, while the glass shades retain clarity and their characteristic soft diffusion.
