Information

This rare three-seat sofa, model GE-236/3, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Getama in Denmark during the 1960s. Constructed from solid oak, the sofa features the original wool upholstery, illustrating Wegner’s expert balance of proportion, construction, and the relationship between wood and textile.

The oak frame exhibits a warm tone with visible grain and precise joinery, reflecting a Scandinavian architectural clarity. The exposed backrest is composed of horizontally arranged oak slats that provide structural support while maintaining a sense of visual lightness. Characteristic of Wegner’s craftsmanship are the subtly curved rear legs and refined, gently angled armrests, which are upholstered yet remain integrated into the overall wood structure, creating a seamless harmony between materials.

The upholstery is original and features two complementary wool textiles. The seat and back cushions are covered in a vivid fabric with an expressive red and black abstract weave, characterized by linear, flame-like streaks. The armrests and sofa body are clad in a more subdued, diagonally woven wool in deep burgundy. Black piping accents the cushions, and the back cushions are tufted with matching buttons, adding both geometric rhythm and tactile richness to the sofa’s design.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was a key figure in Danish modernism, renowned for his ability to unite form and function through sophisticated and often understated construction. His collaboration with Getama began in the late 1940s and produced a series of classic designs celebrated for their comfort and material integrity.

This sofa is in very good original condition, showing light wear to the textiles consistent with age and use. The oak frame is structurally sound and has developed a natural patina over time. The dimensions are 180 cm wide, 82 cm deep, and 75 cm high, with a seat height of 38 cm, approximately 70.9 inches wide, 32.3 inches deep, 29.5 inches high, and a seat height of 15 inches.
