Information

This is a freestanding executive desk produced in Denmark during the 1950s, crafted in rosewood with brass hardware. The desk exhibits a refined, rectilinear design in the style of Ole Wanscher, known for his disciplined approach to proportion, structure, and material integrity. The piece is characteristic of Scandinavian modernism’s emphasis on functional elegance and subtle detailing.

The desk features a symmetrical facade composed of four drawers: two larger side drawers and two central drawers, all with original brass locks and small circular handles. The drawer fronts display rich rosewood grain patterns that continue across the horizontal plane, contributing to the unified and linear visual impression. The top is veneered in rosewood, with a warm reddish-brown tone and deep linear graining, bordered by slightly chamfered edges that add softness to the overall geometric profile.

The construction is supported by four solid legs that extend cleanly from the top, emphasizing structural clarity and minimizing ornamental distraction. The rear of the desk is fully veneered, making it suitable for placement in the center of a room, further underscoring its freestanding utility.

This desk is in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of wear consistent with age, including subtle surface marks and slight patina, primarily on the wood finish and drawer pulls. It has been professionally restored to preserve its structural and aesthetic integrity while maintaining original materials and character.

Ole Wanscher, a Danish designer and professor, was a key figure in mid-century Danish furniture design. Often associated with the cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen, Wanscher was known for blending classical references with contemporary modernist values. While this specific piece is not attributed directly to him, its construction and aesthetic clearly echo his influence and that of his contemporaries, emphasizing quality craftsmanship, noble materials, and timeless proportion.

The style corresponds to mid-century Scandinavian modernism, defined by minimalism, natural materials, and precision joinery. This piece exemplifies the restrained luxury and technical excellence of postwar Danish furniture design, a movement that continues to influence contemporary furniture production.

The dimensions are 167 cm in width, 70 cm in depth, and 73 cm in height. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 65.7 inches wide, 27.6 inches deep, and 28.7 inches high.
