Georg Kofoed easy chair
This rare high-backed easy chair was designed and produced by the Danish cabinetmaker Georg Kofoed during the 1930s. It is an exemplary work from the interwar period, combining traditional artisanal techniques with an emerging modern sensibility in Danish furniture design. The piece’s voluminous, rounded profile and deeply upholstered surfaces convey a sense of sculptural generosity, while its compact footprint ensures a grounded and intimate presence.
The frame is executed in beech, a favored hardwood among Danish cabinetmakers for its stability and fine grain. The chair is covered in its original hand-stitched cognac-brown leather, which has developed a rich, varied patina over decades of use. The high, arched backrest features deep diamond-tufting with individually covered buttons, producing a tactile and visually dynamic surface. Each seam is marked by careful handwork, and the perimeter of the chair is finished with a border of patinated brass nailhead trim, emphasizing the craftsmanship and delineating the chair’s curvilinear form.
The seat is upholstered in natural sheepskin, offering a warm textural contrast to the smooth, time-aged leather. This combination of materials enhances both visual depth and comfort, creating a piece that is as inviting to the touch as it is to the eye. The arms are integrated into the continuous upholstered shell, their gentle slope supporting a relaxed seating position. The chair rests on short, rounded beech feet, which subtly elevate the form without interrupting its monolithic appearance.
Georg Kofoed was known for producing limited quantities of finely crafted furniture, often for a discerning clientele who appreciated bespoke quality. This piece reflects his commitment to structural integrity, comfort, and a quiet luxury rooted in material honesty. The overall form anticipates later Danish modern organic design while remaining firmly in the tradition of master cabinetmaking.
The chair remains in good vintage condition, with heavy but even signs of use, including surface wear, natural creasing, and areas of restored leather. These marks contribute to its authenticity and character, illustrating its long history while preserving full structural stability and comfort.
