Arne Jacobsen easy chair
This is an Egg Chair, model 3316, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. The chair is accompanied by its matching ottoman. This particular example was manufactured in 1965, as indicated by the original Fritz Hansen label. The upholstery is in natural cognac-colored leather, showing a rich, even patina that enhances the sculptural quality of the design. The base is constructed in cast aluminum, featuring a four-star swivel mechanism that functions smoothly and remains structurally sound.
The Egg Chair is one of Jacobsen’s most iconic creations, originally designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Its organic, enveloping form was developed through experimentation with new materials and production techniques of the time, using a foam-covered fiberglass shell to create a continuous, curved surface. The design represents a synthesis of modernist principles and ergonomic comfort, with its high back and rounded contours providing both visual and acoustic shelter.
The ottoman mirrors the chair’s sculptural silhouette and serves as a natural extension of its ergonomic concept. Together, they form a cohesive composition of form and function characteristic of Jacobsen’s architectural and furniture work. The surfaces display signs of age and wear consistent with use, with areas of dryness in the padding at the back, yet the leather retains suppleness and integrity.
Dimensions for the chair are 87.5 cm wide, 80 cm deep, and 106.5 cm high, with a seat height of 37 cm (34.4 x 31.5 x 41.9 in, seat height 14.6 in). The ottoman measures 55 cm wide, 40 cm deep, and 42 cm high, with a seat height of 36 cm (21.7 x 15.7 x 16.5 in).
