Hans Bergström table lamp

Information

This rare table lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp is constructed from brass and wood, combining industrial metalwork with warm natural materials in a balanced and functional composition. The shade is hemispherical in form, made of brass with a softly brushed surface, and features a ring of evenly spaced perforations along the lower edge that contribute to controlled light distribution.

The stem is made of turned wood with vertical fluting, finished in a warm brown tone that contrasts with the golden brass elements. The wooden column tapers subtly toward the top, giving the lamp a slender and well-proportioned profile. The base is circular and made of brass, housing the electrical components and fitted with an original push-button switch. The internal construction includes a brass socket assembly supported by slim brass arms, reflecting ASEA’s precision in technical manufacturing.

When illuminated, the lamp produces a soft downward light while allowing a subtle halo of light to escape through the perforations in the shade, creating a gentle ambient effect. This lighting behavior is characteristic of Hans Bergström’s designs, where functional illumination was combined with atmospheric qualities. Bergström, one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers, frequently collaborated with ASEA and played a central role in shaping Scandinavian lighting design during the mid twentieth century.

The lamp is in good vintage condition with visible signs of usage. The brass surfaces show light scratches, small marks, and areas of patina consistent with age, while the wooden stem displays minor wear without structural issues.

The dimensions are 33 cm in diameter and 45 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 13 inches in diameter and 17.7 inches in height.
