Hans Bergström table lamp
Rare table lamp model 700 designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp demonstrates Bergström’s characteristic combination of restrained Scandinavian modernism and decorative detailing, where organic forms are balanced with refined material contrasts. The composition combines a softly rounded opaline glass shade with a slender cylindrical stem wrapped in braided brown leather, terminating in a circular brass base with integrated switch.
The shade is executed in white opaline glass with an asymmetrical ovoid form resembling an egg or seed pod, diffusing the light evenly and producing a warm ambient illumination when lit. The glass rests within a sculptural brass gallery composed of bent brass rods with rhythmic undulating curves, introducing a subtle decorative element while maintaining the overall functional clarity of the design. The contrast between the satin brass surfaces, the textured leather wrapping, and the smooth translucent glass reflects the material sensitivity often associated with Swedish lighting design of the post-war period.
Hans Bergström was one of the central figures in Swedish mid-century lighting design and founder of Ateljé Lyktan in 1934. His work is recognized for combining modernist principles with warmth and tactility, frequently incorporating natural materials such as leather, brass, wood, and fabric. During the 1940s and 1950s, Ateljé Lyktan established itself as one of Sweden’s leading lighting manufacturers, producing both functionalist and more expressive decorative lighting for domestic interiors. The company’s production from this period is particularly noted for its high level of craftsmanship and carefully balanced proportions.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with age-related wear and patina consistent with use and age. The brass surfaces show minor marks and natural oxidation, while the leather-wrapped stem displays gentle wear and variation in tone. The opaline glass shade is a later replacement and not original to the lamp. The underside is stamped “Ateljé Lyktan Åhus” together with the model number 700.
