Information

This rare table lamp, model 716, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced in the 1950s by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. It exemplifies Bergström’s mastery in combining function with decorative sophistication, and reflects the designer’s characteristic use of tactile materials, architectural proportions, and atmospheric light diffusion.

The lamp features a solid brass construction, including both the base and the shade. The brass has developed a natural patina over time, which contributes to the piece’s vintage authenticity. The shade is distinguished by a uniform pattern of perforations, a hallmark of Bergström’s work during this period. These perforations not only provide a visual texture but also serve a functional purpose by softly diffusing the light and creating a warm, ambient illumination effect.

The vertical column of the lamp is wrapped in brown leather, which introduces a tactile and visual contrast to the metal. The leather shows minor wear consistent with age, retaining its original integrity and providing an earthy counterbalance to the metallic components. The junctions between materials are carefully resolved, demonstrating a level of detail that reflects the craftsmanship standards of Ateljé Lyktan’s production during the mid-century era.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996), the founder of Ateljé Lyktan, was a leading figure in Swedish lighting design. His work is noted for its sensitivity to proportion and material, as well as its commitment to quality in both form and light output. Model 716 is an example of his interest in using brass and leather not only for durability but also for their aging qualities, which deepen the visual appeal over time.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition, with small signs of use including light patina on the brass and subtle wear on the leather wrapping. These characteristics contribute to the authenticity and historical value of the piece.

The lamp has a diameter of 45 cm and a height of 52 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 17.7 inches in diameter and 20.5 inches in height.
