Information

Rare sculptural tray designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Soinne et Kni in Finland. Executed in laminated birch, the tray is made in aeroplanfanér, a technique where thin layers of wood veneer are built up and pressed to create a dense, stable material with striking linear structure.

The form is shaped like an organic drop or leaf, with the laminated layers exposed as flowing contour lines that circle inward and create a beautiful, almost topographical pattern. The warm tones shift between honey brown, amber and deeper reddish brown, emphasizing the natural variation of the birch and the rhythmic lines of the construction. The tray has a gently raised rim and a subtle asymmetry that gives it a strong decorative presence even when not in use.

This is a classic example of Wirkkala’s approach to functional objects, where the technical possibilities of wood and veneer are used to create something both highly practical and visually dynamic. It works equally well as a serving tray, a centerpiece, or as a sculptural object displayed on its own.

Measurements are 28 x 21.5 x 3.5 cm (11.02 x 8.46 x 1.38 in). The tray is in good vintage condition with signs of usage, as well as a minor nick to the outer ring.
