Tapio Wirkkala tray
This very rare tray was designed by Tapio Wirkkala, a prominent Finnish designer known for his influential role in post-war Scandinavian modernism. Produced by Soinne et Kni in Finland during the 1950s, the tray exemplifies the era’s dedication to simplicity, organic form, and fine craftsmanship. It reflects Wirkkala’s ability to merge natural inspiration with modern design principles, creating objects that are both functional and visually compelling.
The tray is constructed from laminated birch, a material chosen for its natural beauty and versatility. The layering technique produces concentric patterns reminiscent of wood’s natural growth rings, emphasizing texture and depth in the design. The tray’s distinctive teardrop shape balances fluid, organic curves with pointed edges, illustrating Wirkkala’s skill in creating harmonious yet dynamic forms.
Tapio Wirkkala’s work spans multiple materials, including glass, wood, and ceramics, and he is celebrated internationally for integrating Nordic craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. Soinne et Kni, the Finnish manufacturer, was known for its innovative laminated wood production methods and collaborations with leading designers of the mid-20th century, resulting in pieces that combined durability with artistic expression.
This tray is preserved in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor wear consistent with its age, which contributes to its authenticity and historic value. Its dimensions measure approximately 29 cm in width, 22.5 cm in depth, and 4.5 cm in height, corresponding to about 11.4 inches wide, 8.86 inches deep, and 1.77 inches high.
