Berndt Friberg vase
This rare and generously sized ceramic vase was designed by Berndt Friberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1967. With its calm, sculptural silhouette and beautifully balanced proportions, it is a striking example of Scandinavian studio ceramics from the period, where form and surface treatment are given equal importance.
The vase features a softly rounded body that rises into a short, slightly flared neck, creating a refined profile that feels both modern and timeless. The surface is finished in an expressive hare fur glaze, characterized by its deep blue tone and finely speckled, almost mist-like texture, with darker nuances around the upper section that enhance the depth and movement of the glaze. The subtle variations in tone and saturation are typical of Friberg’s highly controlled yet organic glazing technique, giving the piece a lively presence even in minimal surroundings.
Measuring 12 cm in diameter and 21 cm in height (approximately 4.7 inches in diameter and 8.3 inches in height), the vase has a substantial scale that works beautifully as a standalone object or as a focal point in a curated ceramic grouping. It remains in good vintage condition, showing gentle signs of age and use, along with minor marks in the glaze that are consistent with careful handling over time.
