Information

Very rare floor lamp designed by Svend Aage Holm Sørensen and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. The model is an expressive and highly characteristic example of Holm Sørensen’s sculptural yet refined lighting designs, where contrasting materials and elegant proportions create a strong architectural presence.

The lamp stands on a round, black lacquered cast iron base from which three slender brass legs rise and meet at the center, wrapped with a dark leather binding detail. This tactile element adds warmth and craftsmanship to the otherwise sleek construction and is a signature feature often associated with Scandinavian mid-century lighting. From the central structure extend two light sources: an upward-facing brass uplight with a sharply folded, triangular cone shade, and an adjustable side spotlight with a black lacquered metal shade. The black shade has a softly curved, waisted form with a white interior, providing a focused and functional reading light that contrasts beautifully with the ambient uplight.

The combination of polished brass, matte black lacquer, leather binding and heavy cast iron base demonstrates Holm Sørensen’s ability to balance decorative elegance with practical function. The uplight casts a warm, indirect glow that enhances architectural corners and ceilings, while the adjustable spotlight provides directed illumination, making the lamp both atmospheric and highly usable. The proportions are tall and slender, giving the piece a refined vertical emphasis that suits both modernist and more eclectic interiors.

Black shade diameter is 17,5 cm (6.9 inches) and height 26,5 cm (10.4 inches). Overall height is 180,5 cm (71.1 inches).

In good vintage condition with small signs of usage and patina consistent with age, including light wear to the brass and minor surface marks to the lacquered elements. A rare and important Scandinavian mid-century floor lamp by one of the most distinctive lighting designers of the period.
