Information

Model Solenn is an outdoor wall lamp designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1950s. The model reflects Jakobsson’s consistent approach to light modulation and material sensitivity, here adapted for exterior architectural use. The construction combines copper and plexiglass, materials chosen for durability as well as for their visual and atmospheric qualities when exposed to natural weathering.

The lamp is composed of a cylindrical copper shade with a clean, horizontal profile. The shade is open at the bottom and fitted with a circular opal plexiglass diffuser that closes the form with a flat, even surface. The diffuser softens and distributes the light downward, producing a warm and controlled illumination suitable for entrances and façades. The copper body is mounted on a short cylindrical arm connected to a round wall plate, creating a compact and balanced projection from the wall. The overall geometry is restrained and functional, with clear proportions and minimal ornamentation.

The copper surface has developed a natural patina over time, presenting nuanced tones of dark brown, deep olive, and areas of green oxidation. Vertical traces and subtle tonal variations are visible on the shade, consistent with age and outdoor exposure. These surface changes are characteristic of untreated copper and form an integral part of the lamp’s material expression. The wall mount and arm display a darker, aged finish, complementing the patinated shade. The plexiglass diffuser remains intact and evenly toned, contributing to a uniform light distribution when illuminated.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson founded his company in 1951 after earlier experience with Carl Malmsten and Werner West. His production in Markaryd became known for its careful craftsmanship and its focus on glare-free, atmospheric lighting. While many of his designs employed brass, copper, and wood veneers for interior settings, the Solenn model demonstrates his ability to translate the same principles of warmth and diffusion to exterior lighting. The emphasis on shielding the light source and directing illumination downward aligns with Scandinavian mid-century ideals of functionalism combined with human-centered design.

Produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, the lamp reflects the company’s high material standards and workshop-based manufacturing typical of Swedish lighting production in the 1950s. The use of copper for outdoor fixtures was both practical and aesthetic, allowing the material to age naturally while maintaining structural integrity.

The dimensions are 22 cm in height, 32 cm in width, and 10 cm in depth, corresponding to approximately 8.7 inches in height, 12.6 inches in width, and 3.9 inches in depth. The lamp remains in good vintage condition with visible signs of usage and an even, well-developed patina consistent with its age and original outdoor function.
